Industry Scenario

The textile industry in India is predominantly cotton based. About 65 % of fabric consumption in the country is cotton.

Hosiery is a part of the textile industry. West Bengal is considered the birth place of hosiery industry in India. More than a century ago, the first hosiery factory in India was set up at Kidderpore, Kolkata, West Bengal.

Bengal maintained its superiority for quite a long time. Along with the hosiery industry, the dyeing and bleaching sector also grew rapidly. There has been an overall growth in the textile industry in the past few years and many new units are being set up.

The dyeing and bleaching sector has proliferated along the bank of the river Ganges in Howrah, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, and Hooghly.

Such industries are labour intensive and are holding a significant place in employment generation. However, like all other small scale industries, these units are mostly unorganized, have financial constraint and are lacking other infrastructure facilities, ranging from know -how on the available technology albeit pollution control system to skilled man power. They also follow very crude method of dyeing and bleaching and some times out- dated or obsolete technologies. These industries are water intensive and are potentially water and air polluting. These coupled with deficiency, both, financial as well as technological and lack of skilled labor pose challenges from the environmental aspect.
