Industry Scenario

Tanning is one of the oldest industries in India and ranks amongst the five top-most export oriented industries of the country. The total value of leather and leather products covering both export and domestic markets is estimated to be around US $ 8 billion for the year 2008. Leather is an intermediate industrial product, with numerous applications in down-stream consumer products industry. The tanning of hides and skins also generates other by-products that are used in several industrial sectors.

The main clusters of tanning industry are located in the States of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab, Rajasthan and West Bengal. There are about 2000 registered tanneries spread all over India. The total processing capacity is approx. 7000 tonnes per year.

A no. of leather processing units were developed over the years at Kolkata. The tanneries, numbering about 500, were mainly located in Tangra, Tiljala and Topsia areas. These tanneries were operated with very basic infrastructure and without adopting any pollution control measures.

Following the Hon'ble Supreme Court verdict, development of an integrated leather complex situated away from the city at Bantala was envisaged to relocate the tanneries which were operated in very unplanned manner within the congested areas of the city as well as to accommodate new entrepreneurs. This leather complex was developed and started in June 2005 encompassing a total land area of 1100 acres.
